Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5: How to Update Your PS4 Games for Free

Yuffie is coming to Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5.

You can play most PlayStation 4 games on the Playstation 5 thanks to the new Sony console backward compatibility function. But some publishers allow you to upgrade PS4 games to PS5 versions for free. This allows you to play in dynamic 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and offers shorter loading times, for a better gaming experience.

A major game that gets an update is last year’s game Final Fantasy 7 remake. This is coming thursday june 10, as well as an expansion – Episode Intermission – starring the brilliant ninja Yuffie Kisaragi. Next-gen update is free for current owners, but not if they got the game through PlayStation Plus in March. Yuffie content will also cost extra (price was not revealed) and is available only on PS5.

On Thursday, the PS4 version added the ability to download your backup data, as previously indicated by IGN. You can then download this file to your PS5 in the new version of the game and pick up where you left off. Any trophies you unlocked in the PS4 version will be automatically re-unlocked on PS5.

It’s a slightly clunky system to get your data saved in the upgraded version, so you need to make sure you do this in advance if you want to upgrade straight to the PS5 version immediately after its release.

Switch to the next generation

The PS5 is available now but has been entry and out of stock at retailers. The digital-only model costs $ 400 and the one with a disk drive $ 500.

Your game upgrades won’t happen automatically or through a typical game update, so it’s easy to accidentally continue playing the PS4 version of a game on your new PS5. You need to go to the game’s page on PlayStation Network and choose to upgrade to the PS5 version. This will download the additional data needed for the next generation features.

You can also upgrade to the PS5 versions if you have a physical PS4 game, as long as you purchased the PS5 with a disc drive. You will still need to use the PS4 disc to play the PS5 version; the upgrade does not give you a free digital copy of the game. You will still download the PS5 update from the PSN, but you will not need a PS5 specific disc – your PS4 will become an authenticator.

If you’ve gone digital-only PS5 and have a disc, you’re out of luck. There are a few additional limitations and caveats:

  • Some PS5 versions of current PS4 games are not yet available.
  • Next-gen versions will be larger files, so they will take up more valuable memory on the console’s SSD.
  • You will end up with a new list of trophies (the list for each version is separate).
  • Some game saves will not be transferred.
  • Some game upgrades are only available in intergenerational bundles or special editions.

Free upgrades you can get right now

Some upgrades will require the purchase of a specific (more expensive) version of the game:

Cyberpunk 2077’s next-gen upgrade will no doubt be breathtaking.
