Ubisoft just announced Ghost Recon Frontline – but if you’re looking for another open-world co-op adventure, this isn’t it. Frontline is a ‘massive’ player-versus-player shooter, and it will be free on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. It will also feature cross-play at launch between all platforms, including Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PC , Luna and Stadia.
And yes, it is billed as a Battle Royale title. The press release reads: “Expedition, the game’s flagship mode, offers a fresh take on the Battle Royale genre. Counting over 100 players in teams of three, these teams will have to work together to achieve dynamic goals on the huge open map with no converging circle. Once players are done collecting information, they will need to head to a drop zone and request an extraction. Once launched, all teams will know the position of the extraction and attempt to intervene, players will have to play tactically to successfully escape and win the game. Additional modes will also be available at launch. “
Needless to say, the initial reaction to this revelation was not particularly positive. The trailer is already inundated with disgust on YouTube, and the main criticism seems to be that … well, it’s not really what people expect from Ghost Recon. But who knows, maybe it will be fun.
There’s no release date for Frontline just yet, but it looks like there will be plenty of first gameplay tests you can sign up for. You can register for these tests on the official website now.
