With the Australian Open in full swing, there’s never been a better time to announce a new tennis sim. And as publishers like Nacon continue to chase Top Spin glory, a new contender has entered the arena (Rod Laver): Kalypso is bringing Matchpoint: Tennis Championships to PlayStation 5 and PS4 in Spring 2022.
The reveal trailer is odd, as it appears to be CGI rather than actual gameplay footage. However, the publisher speaks of a great game: “Using the right tactics, clever player positioning and the use of authentic ball physics. […] players will be able to dominate the tennis tables in tournaments and competitions around the world. Sophisticated character animations and unprecedented player control are combined, creating realistic rallies in which every racquet stroke counts.
It all sounds great, but as we saw in Tennis World Tour 2, you need a huge library of animations to pull off a top-notch tennis title. There will be an expanded career mode with a rivalry system, and 16 real players will be available at launch, including Nick Kyrgios, Garbine Muguruza, Heather Watson, Danill Medvedev, and Kei Nishikori.
The game will also feature clothing and gear from a number of famous brands, such as HEAD, Uniqlo, and Nike. As an initial announcement, our attention was certainly piqued – but we’ll have to get our hands on the game and try it out before we get too excited. It’s nice to have a new Grand Slam contender on PlayStation, though – surely someone will surpass Top Spin 4 one day, huh?
