A reader is shocked to find out he won’t have a PS5 for Christmas but has already accepted the Xbox Series S as a valid alternative.
I read the Reader’s Feature a few weeks ago, about buying a PlayStation 5 and immediately regretting it, with little sympathy. I’ve been trying to get one for a year now and although I couldn’t really afford it at first (so didn’t really try most of the time) I made a deal with my girlfriend to get one for Christmas, if she brought the cash, and therefore couldn’t wait to finally sit down to play on Sony’s latest console this month.
But then she hit me with the bomb. Not wanting to bother over Christmas itself, she told me that since we still couldn’t get our hands on a PlayStation 5, she took it upon herself to use some of the money to buy an Xbox Series S Its logic being that at least that way we’d have a new next-gen console for Christmas, and according to GAME staff who seem to have suggested the idea, Xbox was having a better year than Sony anyway.
You can imagine how happy I was to hear this. But, because I’m a good guy and love my girlfriend, I grit my teeth and pretended to go along with the plan. To be honest I wasn’t sure what to do with just turning around and selling it felt not only rude but unnecessary because to be honest there was little chance of getting a PlayStation 5 at this point. of the year anyway.
Sensing my distress, she suggested that I make it a Christmas present in advance and I used it all week. Considering that Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite are really two of the biggest releases of the season (I still can’t tell if the GAME guy was really trying to be helpful or just trying to make a sale), I admit that I had this new thrill of toys as I downloaded them and got to play them for the first time and… really enjoyed them.
What became immediately obvious to me was that these aren’t the kind of exclusives I would have played on the PlayStation 5, which doesn’t have exclusive arcade racers (Gran Turismo is absolutely not an arcade racer) or first person shooter games. I haven’t played the Halo campaign much yet, but while I’m not that impressed so far, the online action has been great.
The problem is, and it’s something that I don’t think my girlfriend really liked back then, is that even though she’s not a gamer, she enjoys watching me play based games. on stories. We had a great time (in comparison) with people like The Last Of Us, God Of War, and even Bloodborne, as she goes into the story and the strategy, shouting out suggestions and keeping an eye on things while I I’m playing.
However, she can’t really do that with Xbox exclusives. Forza just isn’t that kind of game and she already misses Halo because there isn’t much story and there is no point in just yelling “take this one”.
To me, these aren’t flaws of the games themselves, but they spoil the usual way our gaming sessions work, which means I’m going to have to buy a third-party game for Christmas. Maybe Far Cry 6 or the Mass Effect remasters, which we wanted to get into.
Or, in fact, probably Psychonauts 2. None of us like the look of the characters, but given the good reviews and the fact that this is an Xbox exclusive that’s also a one-on-one story game. player, it seems worth it.
Anyway, what I realized was that in an ideal world, everyone would have access to all the games. The Xbox Series S console offers great value, as does Game Pass, but while I miss the PlayStation 5 games I was looking forward to playing, I also appreciate that what Xbox has to offer is something different. . Which was not the case with the last generation.
So while I would have preferred a PlayStation 5, I actually agree with its rival. I’m also starting to realize that most console rivalries are simply born out of people having to choose between the two and then justify themselves later. Assuming I can get a PlayStation 5 next year, at least that won’t be a problem for me.
