New Fallout game teased by Xbox Exec

Having just steered Fallout 76 on a better path, Bethesda or a twin studio seems to be brewing another story-driven Fallout title.

Bethesda – or one of its sister studios Microsoft – may already be working on the next one Fall game, according to Xbox Game Services chief marketing officer Ben Decker. The executive shared the information during an interview about Xbox Game Pass, which has become a defining advantage of Xbox consoles over Nintendo Switch and PlayStation.

Despite its poor launch state, Bethesda still supports Fallout 76 with updates. The still-online RPG is set 25 years after the series’ nuclear war that destroyed Earth. Although the title was widely criticized at launch for its severely broken and missing content, it has since received numerous updates, improving both its quality and reputation. More updates are planned throughout 2021, which suggests that it won’t be scrapped anytime soon.

Xbox’s Ben Decker recently said GamesRadar, “We have 23 studios on Xbox and Bethesda, working on Halo, Forza, Fallout and a new IP that we haven’t even talked about yet that will blow your mind.. “Although this may refer to further work on Fallout 76, updates to an almost three-year-old game probably wouldn’t warrant Decker’s attention. That said, the executive did not specify what he meant, so a future Fall could be anything from a new mobile game to a full-fledged game Fallout 5. Fallout from past series has included tactics and even pinball games.

If Bethesda and / or a partner studio is preparing a Fallout 5, it may take years for the product to actually ship. The priorities of the company are currently Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, the first of which will probably not be shipped before 2022. Even if The Elder Scrolls 6 is ready in 2023, which could easily push the next Fall in 2024 or later, depending on the staggering of the development teams. Work is particularly complicated at the moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic – while an increasing number of people have been vaccinated, the big studios are still operating largely via remote working. This creates difficulties not only in collaboration, but also in dealing with the huge data resources that a triple-A game demands. Small independent developers, on the other hand, are often used to working remotely and have lower production values.

Some of the Microsoft studios include Infinite halo developers 343 Industries and Minecraft creator Mojang. That number only jumped after Microsoft’s takeover of Bethesda, which ended in March and starred in id Software and MachineGames. One company, Obsidian Entertainment, could theoretically be a good candidate to take Fall, having already developed the critical darling Fallout: New Vegas, and more recently developed its own Fall-as a franchise, The outer worlds.
