Sony acquires the developer of Returnal Housemarque; Is Bluepoint next?

A new developer has joined PlayStation Studios and it couldn’t be more perfect. Housemarque, the Finnish studio behind the recently released critically acclaimed hit Returnal, is now officially part of the PlayStation family.

I’m not sure if anyone is in the least surprised by this announcement as Housemarque has a long-standing relationship with PlayStation. While Return is their most recent game – released on PS5 in April – Housemarque has developed a number of PlayStation exclusive titles over the years.

In 2013, Housemarque’s side-scrolling shoot-em-up Resogun served as the launch title for the PlayStation 4. It was also added to the Instant Game collection for PlayStation Plus members in December of that month and was eventually ported to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation. Vita the following year.

Other iconic Housmarque games include Matterfall (PS4) in 2017, Super Star Dust Ultra VR (PS4) and Alienation (PS4) in 2016, and more. As you can see, Housemarque has had a close working relationship with Sony before.

In a post on the PlayStation blog, Housemarque co-founder and CEO Ilari Kuittinen, noted that joining PlayStation Studios “gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue to deliver gameplay-centric approaches, while experimenting with new ways to play. narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this Art Form. “

Honestly, that’s a lot for both sides. Housemarque gets the financial backing to continue pushing the boundaries with its games, and Sony gets another strong studio to add to its growing portfolio of great proprietary games.

It’s also a critical response to Microsoft, which has engulfed developers and publishers left and right. Microsoft recently acquired Bethesda and has confirmed that Starfield will be exclusive to Xbox. The same will likely be true for The Elder Scrolls VI. Sony therefore had to do something.

While Housemarque is a wonderful addition to the PlayStation family, Sony may not be done adding yet. Speculation is mounting that Sony may also acquire Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based studio that has handled numerous PlayStation remakes and remasters, including Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Gravity Rush Remastered, Shadow of the Colossus, and most recently Demon’s Souls. The speculation of an acquisition of Bluepoint comes from a tweet from PlayStation Japan who actually originally tweeted an image with the Bluepoint Games logo instead of Housemarque.
