Watching a movie or reading an article is undeniably better on a bigger screen and with the arrival of the waterproof FOLD3 in 2021, more and more people are paying extra for this luxury.
Frankly, I was blown away by the effectiveness of Microsoft’s stab at cloud gaming.
Diffusion Forza, Back4Blood and over 100 other titles straight to my PC, iPad or phone has been remarkably easy and the option I use more and more is Samsung’s Galaxy FOLD3.
For those who don’t have a controller handy, the screen is large enough that you can see the games you play while using touch controls.
The value of the selfie camera under the phone screen also makes sense. Of course, if you look at it you can see gaps in the pixels, but when you focus on nailing a turn Forza Horizon it fades away beautifully, maintaining the illusion of a solid 7.6-inch screen.
Of course, its 120Hz display can’t yet be tested with streaming games limited to 60fps, but it’s good to know the tech is there if an update arrives.
Pairing a controller takes things to another level if you’re happy to carry one. Not all gamepad accessories are as compatible as you might expect given the size of the FOLD, as these items are designed for standard non-foldable phones.
I personally used my aftermarket Nintendo Switch Pro controller while browsing Ori and Celeste for the second time and it works perfectly with little noticeable lag on a solid 5G connection. I would also recommend a stand if you don’t want your FOLD to occasionally slide off its thin edge while leaning against something on your desk.
Playing on FOLD often frustrated me before Game Pass Ultimate.
It’s not about holding a hand, so a lot of your regular touch control games aren’t as comfortable. The all-new S-Pen that works with the FOLD fixes this problem, but it’s still something more you need to carry (and buy).
At $ 2,499, the FOLD3 is still a big ask, but it’s $ 500 cheaper at launch than the FOLD2.
As technology gets cheaper over time, foldables are expanding beyond fashion and gamers looking for a phone that doubles as a streaming device should take note.
