Warner Bros. could sell game studios; Xbox, EA and Sony interested

Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly intends to sell some of its game studios and IPs to major players in the industry. This is not the first time that this rumor has circulated. In the summer of 2020, there were rumors that Warner Bros. was considering selling some of its game divisions. At the time, Xbox was rumored to be interested in a deal with Warner Bros. part of the property of WB. It looks like it could potentially materialize as a reality now.

According to Fanbyte’s Imran Khan, Warner Bros. Discovery can “buy” its game studios and licensed intellectual property (i.e. Batman, Superman, Harry Potter) from the industry. Khan noted that big names in the industry such as Microsoft, Sony, Electronic Arts, Take-Two and more are all interested in acquiring these teams. It is not known if Warner Bros. would keep an IP address or teams for himself or sell everything in bulk. It’s also unclear whether he would be willing to split the intellectual property and studios among different buyers. Either way, Khan said he didn’t have enough information to write an official report in confidence, so that has to be taken with a grain of salt.

When the merger of the Warner Bros. Discovery wrapped earlier this month, a report was released on the company’s potential plans for the future. In this report, it was noted that Warner Bros. Discovery wanted to “strengthen” its games division, suggesting it would invest more in games based on properties like DC. No new AAA games have been announced since the merger ended, so we don’t have any concrete idea from the company at this time. It is possible that Warner Bros. Discovery saw interest in other companies re-branding in 2020 and felt it might be a worthwhile move, but there’s no word yet.
