Every month, gamers speculate, venture guesses, and search for leaks about what next month’s PlayStation Plus titles will be.
Last month, for example, the leaks were occasional. However, they were only disclosed a few days before the big reveal.
For October, gamers have come up with a really good theory on what October’s PlayStation 5 freebie will be. For my part, I am convinced.
Okay, so what’s the game?
I’m glad you asked. The free PS Plus title on PS5 for October will be [drum roll . . . ]
Hell let loose
What the fuck Hell let loose?
This is an upcoming WWII first person shooter that is considered “hardcore” by many gamers. It features massive 50 vs 50 player battles in a realistic and realistic WWII setting. It’s the kind of game where a ball can take you down easily, where team strategy is everything, and where people like me used to play. Call of Duty and Battlefield need to seriously reassess our strategy.
The game has already been released on Steam (PC) where it is getting very positive user reviews, which bodes well for console gamers.
Sounds cool, but why PS Plus?
Oh, there are so many reasons. Here are a few:
- PS Plus games are almost always announced on the last Wednesday of the month. This is not always true – sometimes the last Wednesday is too early or too late – but most of the time. The games are then released for free the following Tuesday. This month, the last Wednesday is September 29 and the following Tuesday is October 5. Guess which game will be released on consoles on October 5th? Yeah.
- You can currently pre-order Hell let loose on Xbox Series X | S but you can’t pre-order it on PlayStation 5. Why? Could it be that Sony doesn’t want to have to issue pre-order refunds once a group of PS Plus users realize they can get it for free? It seems likely. Refunding angry PS Plus subscribers is more of a headache than simply not allowing pre-orders, which Sony has every reason to allow, barring special circumstances.
- It is not known that the game will arrive on Xbox Game Pass anytime soon, indicating that Sony has an agreement with publisher Team17 and developer Black Matter Pty Ltd.
- Another even more important indication that there is an agreement between Sony and the creators of the game? This weekend’s open beta is for PS5 players only. The beta runs today through September 20 on PS5, so you can get a taste of what it looks like ahead of its October 5 release. But you can only pre-order it on Xbox Series X | S. It must mean something!
Well I’m convinced, but what about the two PS Plus games on PS4?
I’m glad you’re convinced. I’m too. Unfortunately, barring a plausible leak, we have no idea what other October PS Plus titles will be. We’ll just have to wait and see. But stay tuned to this blog and follow me on Twitter and Facebook. I cover these leaks and rumors every month.
